About us

The Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar) District Zonal Sports Committee was established in the academic year 1980–81. It is one of the four zonal committees functioning under the jurisdiction of Savitribai Phule Pune University, and it covers a significant number of affiliated colleges within its region.

Over the years, the Committee has earned a strong reputation for its discipline, commitment, and consistent excellence in organizing a wide range of intercollegiate sports competitions. Each year, during the Annual general meeting, one college is unanimously appointed as the host institution for the year’s sports events. To ensure smooth execution, two Joint Secretaries are also selected to assist in organizational duties.

A key highlight of this structured and efficient model is the annual "Excellent Sports Competition Organizer" Award, presented to the host college in recognition of its outstanding performance in managing and coordinating sports events with precision and enthusiasm.

Further, to promote broader participation and excellence in university-level sports, the Committee on behalf of Savitribai Phule Pune University, also recognizes colleges contributing the highest number of athletes to the university's All India Inter-University teams. Initially, two awards were given annually:

  • Best Sports College (Rural)
  • Best Sports College (Urban)

  • From the academic year 2024–25 onwards, a revised system has been adopted wherein colleges are grouped based on student strength. Awards for 'Best Sports College' are now given accordingly within these groups, ensuring fair and inclusive recognition of sporting achievements across varied institutions.

The classification for the 'Best Sports College' award based on student strength is as follows:
  • Student strength from 01 to 700
  • Student strength from 701 to 1200
  • Student strength from 1201 to 2000
  • Student strength from 2001 to 3000
  • Student strength above 3000
